This exhibition continues the Kunsthalle Mannheim's program of presenting radical reinterpretations of drawing. On display is a major retrospective of Austrian artist Constantin Luser's work, including drawings, wire sculptures, and musical instruments.
By combining drawing, objects, and sound, Luser transcends the boundaries of conventional drawing. He questions the function of the line when it leaves the two-dimensional image carrier, conquers space, and moves or expresses itself like invisible sound.
The artist explores various approaches to drawing and develops them further as part of his creative process. Starting with a traditional approach, he allows his thoughts run free in the sense of disegno, or the initial idea spontaneously put down on paper. Subsequent works see the drawing detach from its paper carrier and dematerialize, continuing to exist as an idea that takes the form of a pure line. This line emerges as a dynamic, ever-changing element. Luser uses wire or tubes, combining them in exhibitions with spatial and acoustic experiments. Delicate and seemingly fragile, his abstract wire objects float in space, moving slightly and casting shadows that refer to changes in perspective and the mobility of thought.
The forms take on a physical presence, growing into complex structures made up of thicker tubes pointing inwards and outwards. This creates spaces that oscillate between inner worlds and external perceptions. The works enable us to experience the interplay between inside and outside. In the instrument sculpture, these tubes condense into a polyphonic structure. They unite several voices, creating a dynamic synergy. This polyphony establishes a new unity between the work, the artist and the viewer.
